IPTV Buffering? 7 Fixes That Actually Work

Buffering is frustrating, but it's almost always the connection or the device — not the channel itself. Work through these seven fixes in order; most people are sorted by step three.

1. Test your internet speed

Run a speed test on the same device you watch on. You want roughly 25 Mbps for HD and 50 Mbps for 4K. If the number is well below that, you've found your culprit before touching anything else.

2. Switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi — or better, use Ethernet

The 2.4 GHz band is crowded and slow. Connect to your 5 GHz network, or plug the device into the router with an Ethernet cable (Fire Stick needs a cheap Ethernet adapter). This is the single biggest fix for most people.

3. Move the device closer to the router

Walls and distance kill Wi-Fi. Use the HDMI extender so a Fire Stick isn't crammed behind a metal TV, and keep the router in the open rather than in a cabinet.

4. Restart the device and the router

A classic for a reason. Power-cycle both the streaming device and your router — it clears memory and forces a fresh connection, and it fixes an astonishing number of problems.

5. Choose the HD feed instead of 4K

On a slower or busy connection, pick the HD version of a channel. Smooth HD always beats stuttering 4K, and most people can't tell the difference across a room.

6. Close background apps and clear the cache

Other downloads, updates and open apps steal bandwidth. Close them, and clear your player app's cache in its settings to get rid of stale data.

7. Change your DNS

Some ISPs slow down streaming traffic. Setting your device's DNS to a public resolver such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 can route around that and smooth things out.
